    Because it's quite shallow (I was told by my guide no more than 1.5 meters at any given point), it freezes over quite thoroughly in the winter and lots of locals and visitors have fun skating here (whether on actual skates or just zooming about in their sneakers). It's really beautiful and a highlight of any tour to Beijing, particularly if you're from warmer climes and unaccustomed to frozen lakes that you can hike across.

    This mall has a Starbucks and a Dairy Queen/Orange Julius (don't get your hopes up if you want a country basket while in Beijing though, the DQ only serves ice cream products plus hot dogs).
